Whenever I pack for a trip I realize something essential about my personal style. This past weekend I was in Chicago for a few days of shoots with Tandem Journal (more on this soon). The shoots are (ironically) for an editorial spread on packing. In my interviewing others on their packing style, I began to contemplate my own.

When I travel I like to play it safe. I don't bring my most fun pieces- I bring my most versatile. I want all of my clothes to work as well in the day as they do after dinner. I also want to be supremely comfortable and to look polished. so here is my secret for a travel wardrobe that is versatile, comfortable and polished: Monochrome.

I layer like a fiend- always in charcoal and black. I started with a few grey t-shirts, a black v-neck sweater, a few different cardigans, black jeans, and a few scarves. Variety enough for a change in temperature and location- yet similar enough that I could make many different combinations. That is how I travel. Not the most fun- but when you want to travel light, you have to make a few alterations. To brighten things up I carried a bright blue bag (vintage train case that several stylists mistook for a Marc Jacobs) and a bright red scarf. Black Frye harness boots were comfortable and versatile enough to work the entire weekend.

In the next few days I will be highlighting great monochromatic style including a few great looks from notorious monochrome Blake Jacobson and the latest designs from Jane Mow.

Zach Stone: On Clothing and Friendship

"We all like presents. I love giving and receiving gifts. The other day I was reminded of one of the nicest presents I have received in a while: a bow tie from Hermes. It was not a memorable gift because it was from Hermes- even though it is likely to be the only thing I ever own from that venerable establishment- but, rather, because of the giver. I moved to Wadham in January 2010 when I was appointed as a Sub Dean. As part of my job I received partial SCR membership and occasional lunch rights. I distinctly remember quaking in my boots the first time I went to SCR lunch. Not because the Wadham Fellows are notoriously mean, closed, or tradition bound- happily the opposite in fact- but simply because I was a) a grad student and b) a Yank. I lived in utter terror of cutting the cheese in the wrong manner and being forever scorned as an uncouth American. Luckily for me, one of the tone setters of Wadham’s SCR happens is among the kindest men I on planet earth. I hindsight, it was probably painfully obvious I didn’t know anyone as it’s hard to hide when you are a 6-4 bearded American in a room of Oxford dons. Nevertheless, he dragged me from the end of the table into the thick of the conversation and generally ensured that I always felt welcome and was introduced to people and so on and so on. Switching gears, I wear neckties a lot. Basically, I find it much easier to be productive during the day when wearing a tie. It makes me feel grown up I guess. Moreover I have a predilection for bowties for many reasons, reasons I lack the space to delve into at this time. Remember, I am a rather noticeable person being large, American, and at the time quite beardy. Anyhow, friends recognized my affection for the bowtie and commented on it. It became a sort of college joke. One day I arrived at my pidge to be greeted by parcel of an unmistakable shade of orange. Attached was a note that said something to the effect of: ‘This was a gift to me, but I don’t wear bowties but you do. I thought you might enjoy it.’ Needless to say I was moved. I will not lie, it is a stylish piece of neckwear and I appreciate it as such. However, much like my boots, the physical act of donning and wearing it never fails to remind me of treasured memories. Especially at a phase in my life when I am again feeling insecure and venturing out into new, at times scary, environments. My friend’s real gift was friendship, as I warmly remembered when we bumped into each other yesterday as I was wearing the said bowtie and had a quick but encouraging chat."

On Adventure

This month ushers in a new component of Culture Keeper: Adventure. Adventure is at the very heart of who I am as a person and infuses its way into this blog. It also happens that those extremely stylish folks who contribute to culture keeper are some of the most adventurous people I know. In the coming months I will be featuring true tales of Adventure, Fashion, and Cultural interaction from Tyler Grant, Calvin Walterhouse, Zach Stone, and perhaps others.

...and who better to kick off a discussion of adventure that Ryan McGinley?

Ryan McGinley's Photography is the embodiment of adventure. His work is filled with energy and excitement and exploration- using nudity to express a carefree innocence.

Nudity In Church

In the Art World nudity is commonplace and almost passe- however- "Nude Art in the Church"is a surprisingly sore subject. Whenever I bring it up people get rather animated. Most opinions on the subject seem based on rumor, exaggeration and the opinions of others. This is an unavoidable topic- for me as the majority of my painting commissions are for churches. Let me remind you, the reader, that this is not a blog about spirituality. It is however about art and creativity.

In my creative journey I am faced with this question daily- in my blog, in the work I do for magazines, but especially in the Church. In the coming weeks I will defer to experts and artists who have carefully discussed, thought, and researched this topic. For today I will express my personal thoughts. I view nudity as a very important topic- central in fact to any belief system and especially vital in the Christian tradition. So here it is- not a rant for everyone- but an invitation to the Christian Church to re-think its stance:

+ Action/Reaction
People react. The Church reacts. The current, majority stance on nudity is a "play-it-safe-don't-create-controversy-stance" that is a reaction to extreme elements of past art. Although there is a connection between nudity and sexuality- that connection is at best overplayed. The church has for years been reacting to the extremes of "the world" and allowing the whiniest element of the church to have their say- to the detriment of Christianity's spiritual development and edification.

+What is the purpose of the human form?
There are many within Christianity that would posit that the human form is completely fallen and useful only for sexual perversion. The irony is that relegating the human form to a completely sexual role is in its self a sexual perversion. It is not at all what the God of the bible and the christian church intended. It also reeks of "Gnosticism", or the separation of the physical (evil) from the spiritual (good). One cannot discuss nudity without a discussion of Gnosticism.

+ The biblical narrative connects nudity with a "fallen state".
Adam and Eve sin and Wham! there is a direct connection between that sin and their clothed state. But notice in the text that the human form is not considered sinful- what we read is shame. Shame is a message from within that says "cover-up". Not a message from God. Another aspect that gets discussed very rarely is that when the redeemer comes and sin is atoned for- WHAT HAPPENS TO NUDITY THEN? To some degree Christ redeemed the physical world as well as the spiritual world. We also must attach some significance to to very physical nature of the created world- when God created our physical forms he said that they "were good". Christ himself took on flesh- a nude body- and remained sinless. It would be a great irony indeed to reject the physical form out of squeamishness and prudery. What God has called good and beautiful let no one call otherwise.

+ The communication of humanity/universality/brokenness
There are some things that only nudity can communicate- Nude art is powerful and evocative. I might even go so far as to say that those who oppose the human form are in fact ignoring much deeper discussions within themselves. Many would love to not go anywhere near the dark and very real elements of humanity and spirituality. Ignoring nudity is the safest way to ignore deep discussions- for it is one step down the road to ignoring The Arts all-together (which much of the worldwide church has been doing for years). The discussion of nudity in the Church is really a piece of a wider discussion of "art in the church". In churches that allow any form of art at all there is a tension between "art that mollifies and pleases" and "art that challenges and edifies".

Sail!

As Winter gets slightly Vernal I start to think about Summer. Summer has a lot to do with sailing, and picnics and swimming and riding your bike lazily down main street. Last summer I was living in Traverse City, Michigan. It was great because I could ride my bike to the beach in under five minutes- so I tended to swim several times a day. There were plenty of outdoor festivals and good energy everywhere. On the other hand I did go to the beach a lot by myself which is not always the most fun- and I read a lot of Camus- not a summerfuncombo that I would recommend. Perhaps this summer I will be somewhere new- I have no idea- but I will try to be in a place where I don't have to swim alone every day. The best parts of this summer were the visits from friends and family. I recently raided my friend Michael Newsted's Instagram archive for pics from our sailing picnic. That was a splendid day of tea and thrifting and lounging and swimming and meeting new friends and dining with old friends and of exploration. As always we did it in style:

Five Things I Love About Bryan + Mae

Bryan + Mae are the duo responsible for much of the brilliant photography featured on Culture Keeper. You may perhaps recall their shoot with Ben Biondo a few weeks back. Meanwhile... We reflect on what conspires to make Bryan + Mae so amazing:

+ Teamwork
Bryan and Mae are a solid team. Husband and Wife, Photographer and Photographess, Editor and Businesswoman. These kids have their game honed and it really works for them. I know other teams- but Bryan and Mae are by far the most agile and well-connected. They do a lot of wedding photography and their teamwork in that setting is legendary.

+ Aesthetic Commitment
Bryan and Mae know who they are visually. they have a very solid style that is at once candid and raw- but also gentle and realistic. They have the ability to capture the beauty and glances and wisps and moments. I am often taken aback by their images. They know their style and they dwell within it in a comfortable, flexible way.+ Rockin'
Bryan and Mae have created themselves. They have painstakingly crafted their own image and worked their fingers to the shutter-clicking-bone building their own photography business. That is super-encouraging. It is a great example to see what kind of drive and determination it takes to make your dreams work- and to see that it is in fact possible.

+ People, People
Bryan and Mae love people. they gather sweet, beautiful, and creative people around them and send out some major good vibes. Times with them are spent also with new friends, good music, good cider and plenty of exploration. Bryan once suggested having at least one mini-adventure every day- which is perhaps some of the best advice I have ever received. Mae once read Michael Newsted and I a story so beautiful it made me cry. They are amazing people.

+ Integrity
Bryan and Mae are vegans- and before you get the impression that they are like those other judgemental/preachy kind of vegans let me set the record straight. Bryan and Mae are gentle educators- they quietly live out their beliefs in a holistic way- from the way they worship down to the shoes they buy and the food they eat. There is a sacred unity in the details of their life and work. To cook with them is to have your imagination opened to the possibilities of what food can become. Cooking becomes a measured, beautiful act.

Bobbi Graves: Letting Go of Youth

Culture Keeper Favorite Bobbi Graves discusses beauty and aging:

"There’s an uh-oh moment in every person’s life, whether at the first fine gray hair or the first fine line, when we realize that the blush of youth is leaving. We can panic (and pluck), but the key to weathering this transition with aplomb is to redefine how we think about beauty. No matter who you are or how much money you throw at a plastic surgeon, you will age. You can control how you deal with it: denial or with dignity. I chose the latter. I want to find another way to feel beautiful rather than turning back the clock – a change in attitude can help us regain confidence and even improve our looks.

I remember the day I passed by bathroom mirror and thought I saw my mother. I also remember the day I passed that same mirror and saw my grandmother. We have an attachment to the image we see in the mirror, and barring illness or major weight fluctuations, that image may remain much the same in your 20’s & 30’s. But when it begins to change, it doesn’t just affect your looks, it affects your identity. These changes reach down to a deeper place: what your future holds, who you are as a woman.

If you look at aging as an illness or as something unnatural, it can lead to rash decisions. No matter what you do, your youth is something you eventually have to let go of, and allow yourself to feel sad about the loss. You can’t change society’s attitude, but you can change your own. I am learning that I need to leave behind the youthful image I once associated with beauty. Find something you can get better at doing as you get older. I chose to become an etiquette consultant.

Mourning the loss of youth is not unlike what occurs when you lose a loved one. At first there is a feeling of, “oh no, this isn’t happening.” Then there is a gradual understanding that you can’t hold on to the past. There may be a deep sadness that life has turned a corner, but you have to let go. If I tried to preserve the look I had in college, it would only make me sad and anxious. When you truly accept that your life stage is changing, it doesn’t feel so sad in the end. You can have a big cry and then move on with your life.

So, here is what I am doing these days – I am redefining beauty. When I glance in the mirror, instead of worrying about my appearance looking older, I think about looking good at my age. I am changing my internal dialog and thinking about whether there is anything I can do to look my best at my age now, but it takes practice. The notion of perfection isn’t healthy for young kids, and it is definitely not healthy as you get older. There are certain aspects of your face and your body that don’t change that much, and you should concentrate on those – I love buying shoes and jewelry because those sizes seldom change. It’s up to you to take your positive features and attributes and wear them with pride.

Once you accept you can’t turn back the clock, concentrate on looking good/healthy versus looking young. Take positive steps but don’t take obsessive amounts of time on it. Stay active. Be involved with something you feel passionate about.

Botox? Plastic surgery? That’s your call. But since I feel strongly that there is no turning back the clock; I see it as a short-term solution to a long-term issue. I do foresee that there are increasingly better procedures that are not so radical and are probably going to be what dyeing hair used to be. But again, none of these procedures replace the necessary internal work that helps us age with grace.

It’s alright to mourn the loss of youth, but in the end you will see yourself differently. You will feel more hopeful. You will create a solid foundation from which to grow for the rest of your life. You will gain a comfort level, a renewed energy for other things. When I look in the mirror now, what I see reflected back looks like age-appropriate beauty. I like my life.

Face your uh-oh moment head-on.

Listen to your internal dialogue.

Learn to appreciate your appearance today.

Make some healthy changes. "

Caroline Lucas: On Clothing

Caroline Lucas is a beautiful actress currently dividing her time between California and Mozambique. To refer to her simply as an actress would of course be to miss the essence of who she is, for "Carrie" has a passion for people, for the poor, for creativity and for adventure. She is one of those people who is actively transforming the world around her through beauty and kindness and intentionality. Carrie recently communicated her ideas on the complex relationship between Clothing and spirituality... a topic which she has wrestled with for many years.

"Clothing is spiritual because it can significantly represent and communicate identity. 'Who am I?' this is a question everyone is asking. Many of us try to answer this soul search and define our life purpose with something so simple... our clothing.

Clothing not only communicates our personal identity but also communicates identity in contrast to those around us. It can seem to set us above some and below others- simply by the monetary value of our clothes, how clean they are, and how recent. This monetary divide is felt at every level of society, but especially with the extremely poor. In the company of poverty one is keenly aware of this struggle for identity. It says to some, 'I am like you,' and to others 'I am not like you.' Therefore it can divide, or it can unite.

The reality is of course, that we all do this. No matter how shallow it seems, it is a fact of life, a way in which we as human beings can categorize an assimilate the incoming information from our environment. We assess the history and destination of a person often upon first glance. It's unintentional, natural, and happens subliminally.

Originally, all clothing came from the earth. Perhaps that is why I love natural fibers? There is something spiritual about wearing wool and linen, silk and cotton. Something tangible and real to put on your body that which has the spiritual force of nature and has been wrought with care by human hands. So many fabrics now are synthetic, not a bad thing, but they don't seem to breathe well. Weird term isn't it... fabric breathing? There is something about breath that seems spiritual to me. The combination of mass-production and synthetic create a world of clothing that does not seem up to the task of shaping human identity.

Is clothing really a mask? Is it a fabric barrier; a way to hide and prevent intimacy? I always think back to the role clothing played in the Adam and Eve narrative. Clothing as punishment and shame. Clothing is a reality of life- a beautiful part of life. We are of course much more than what we wear. Our clothing ought not to completely define us. We were created to so radiate from within that we need no clothing. (... and perhaps that is a topic for another day)"

It is a rare occasion in life that one has the privilege of meeting someone as gracious and charming as Bobbi Graves. This New-England native is the epitome of kindness and decorum... in fact, she teaches seminars on protocol and deportment. Bobbi lives out her expertise. An afternoon in her home is likely to be spent drinking tea, lounging by the fire in a wing-back chair or watching BBC dramas. Among her other accomplishments Bobbi is the mother of Ashleigh Graves-Roesler and Mab Graves- (Culture Keeper favorites) her entire family is fantastic and quite accomplished.

Calvin Walterhouse: On Clothing And Identity

Who are you?
What do you have to say?
What do you want from life?

"Identity, soul, desire. Questions with myriad answers. Questions that have been asked for time untold. Questions that plague and occupy the minds of kings, sages, philosophers, and the everyman alike. Questions that only you can answer for yourself. “These questions do not concern me” you may say. But if they do not, they should. If they do not, someone else is answering them for you, determining your destiny, stealing your money, violating your land.

These questions present challenges, and a confrontation with and an immersion into the unknown, and so it is quite understandable that most people leave them unexamined, or at least unrealized. But they can always be felt gnawing at the back of your consciousness, begging to be acknowledged, asking you to explore them. You know deep down that you want to know more, to discover new things about yourself and life, but you silence this voice because it is dangerous, because it might make you or those around you uncomfortable, because it might evoke change.

Maybe you cannot abandon all of your possessions and allow the winds of destiny to blow you where they may, but you are powerful and you have a voice that must be heard, you need not be afraid to speak. Words although powerful are not always necessary to communicate, the themes of identity, soul, and desire can be explored daily at an essential and primal level: what you wear. The claim by many that fashion is a superficial pursuit is false, and leads many to never explore themselves and the world around them in one of the most simple ways possible. What is more is that those who claim not to care about what they wear are only lying to themselves. The most ascetic of ascetics has an aesthetic. The skin with which we cover our skin every morning is a communication to the world around us, it is an expression of who we are, and there is no limit to what we can say. It communicates which groups we are a part of and which not, who we are, how we feel, what we are thinking, and what we want from life.

And so who are you, what do you have to say, what do you want from life? What you clothe yourself with is the first and essential step in determining the direction in which your journey shall disembark. Explore, experiment, experience, the answers do not matter so long as they are your own, refuse to allow others to answer these questions for you. It will take courage and boldness to start, but you will soon discover that you are strong, brave, and empowered and free to dress as you please."

My Style: Military Update

I am not really a "military person". I hang out with a lot of pacifists, hippies, poets and artists- so the military is not really my scene. But vintage military pieces can always be in style. Here are a few that I recommend:

+ The Military Coat
I really enjoy a good military coat. Perhaps it is the buttons, which play upon my penchant for 1960's mod. I have a black sea captain's jacket and a grey wool trench they are two of my favorite pieces. I build my outfits around particular items- vintage military coats are a great place to start.

+ The Haircut
Every man within forty miles of a barber is currently trying for some version of this haircut. It is part-classic, part-rebel. which, in my opinion is the perfect combiniation for a gentleman. To err on the classy side- leave it longer on the crown as Xavier Dolan does in the second image.
+ The Book
"The Seven Pillars of Wisdom is perhaps one of my favorite books. Second, perhaps to "With Lawrence in Arabia" by Lowell Thomas- which is really just a book about this book. What makes a military book a good book in general is when it tells a story of adventure that has more to do with history and humanity than waging war on your nation's enemies.

+The Backpack
Military backpack? I'd wear that! This one is updated with a great color. You really cannot go wrong with military gear- in canvas or leather. If you are using vintage, make sure that you remove labels and patches before traveling abroad.

+ The Transportation
I really like the idea of this shiny black Vespa. tres classy... yet it has a military vibe. One would look a bit too "third-Reich" rolling around town with a side car. This is much classier.

+ The Boots
Perhaps they still have a "punk" connotation- but I think that combat boots can be done in an updated way. They are very utilitarian- boots that are durable but can shine-up to look great with a suit. My friend Kirstin Stiebel believes strongly in combat boots. She would be so proud.

Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo inspires me beyond my own comprehension. A quick flip through a book of her paintings and I have to go to my studio immediately. I love the bright colors she used, and the autobiographical themes she toyed with. When I decorate, everything ends up looking her work- vibrant colors, patterns, archaeological finds, and little animal statues. I guess she sometimes inspires my clothing choices as well.

Who is Calvin Walterhouse ?

Calvin Walterhouse is one of my dearest friends, and one of the most incredible people I know. Calvin, his wife Ama, and their wee son Salvador are currently living on the coast of Brazil- writing and adventuring. I could tell many stories about who he is, what he has experienced, and what he could potentially achieve- but honestly, I hope that he will tell those stories himself. He has a few articles in the works for Culture Keeper- so stay tuned.

Calvin is a kindred spirit, lover of poetry, and is the physical embodiment of adventure. Every aspect of his being challenges ideas and pushes toward truth. Calvin also has his own amazing style- which typically consists of a piece of fabric wrapped around his waist with no shirt. He cares deeply about people and social justice and good books and new experiences.

One day Calvin Walterhouse will change the world- and not in a "donate to our charity" sort of way. He will transform the way each of us think and act and live. This man has that potential. I am sure of it.

I have a slight obsession. I have worn glasses since the second grade- and I still love wearing them. A friend recently asked me about shopping for eyewear. Here are my suggestions:

+ Buy Well
I wish that I could say that I take my own advice- but I don't. In the past I have bought really cheap frames (cue regret). Think about this: you wear your glasses every day. If you have contact lenses perhaps you don't. Either way- consider how often you will wear them and spend accordingly. Eyeglasses are the most recognizable trademark you have, and the most memorable item you wear. I highly recommend Tom Ford Eyewear. You can feel the quality. (Is that luxury on your face?)

+ Don't worry about it
People are always talking about face-shape and how you should purchase certain corresponding styles. I say that is ridiculous. Find what you like and what you think looks good on you. Ask your friends and family.

+ Know Yourself
*warning* do not purchase a pair of glasses because you want to look like someone else or because you think they are "cool". Those reasons are mega-lame. Invent your own image. Have your friends help you find what looks good on you. Find a pair that are off-beat and perhaps even dangerous. You know yourself better than anyone else- but don't just purchase a pair of glasses, this is your chance to re-invent your appearance- don't waste this chance.

+Try Try Try
If you have only tried on a few hundred pairs- you are not done yet. Get started several months before you actually need a pair. Survey multiple shoppes. Ask questions. Find out where their glasses are made, what are they made from, and who makes them. Don't let little children slave away on a pair of glasses that make you look tacky.

+ Buy Vintage
Seriously- vintage glasses can rock. Persol is a great example of an optical company whose frames hold up to time, and wear. If you are lucky enough to find a vintage (1950's) pair in an antique store or on eBay - snatch them up. They hold their value well and have a spring in them that makes them extremely comfortable to wear. A few years ago I found a pair of solid silver frames at my favorite antique store. They are small and round and make me look a bit like Gandhi. One day I will put lenses in them and wear them every fabulous day.

+ When in Doubt
Warby Parker is a pretty amazing company. They let you pick out 5 pairs, try them on at home, and return the ones you don't like. You don't have to pay shipping and it only costs $95 dollars. (They are not even paying me to say this). In addition they partner with non-profits around the world to provide a pair of glasses to someone in need for each pair sold. It all sounds like a great plan to me- and they have classic styles.

Two Views: Paris

One of the interesting things about Paris is that no two people have the same view of her. Perhaps that is true of any city, but you can feel it much more distinctly when people talk of Paris. I run into at least one person a week who wants to tell me of their day/week/semester here. Each story is different, each person feeling like they have experienced the true version. The beautiful thing is that there are so many versions to enjoy.

Recently two bloggers went to Paris. Each took beautiful photos. Each blogged. We are faced with two distictly different views of the same city. Lets compare, shall we?

Six Things I Learned From Anna E. Cottrell

Anna E. Cottrell is the owner and creator of Tulip Louise, the beautiful blog I recommended to you a few days ago. This Arkansas native is currently the Fashion Week correspondent for Rue Magazine and is a phenomenal stylist. What I appreciate most about her blog is the glimpse it gives you into Anna's personal style. Her outfits are always amazing! So, let's take a look at Anna's style and see where she rocks it.

Here are six lessons we can learn from the outfits of Anna E. Cottrell:

1) Keep it modest
Notice how She is able to pull off this leopard print and red hot pencil skirt whilst still looking respectable? This is the outfit of a woman who is not giving away her secrets. If you want to dress boldly and look this phenomenal- keep it modest.

2) Be Brave!
Patterns, Prints, Sequins, etc. Anna experiments. You should too! You can tell that she has fun with her clothes. Of course brave does not mean foolish. Anna knows good style and invests in good pieces. Buy well, but have fun with the way you dress.

3) Keep it classy
This outfit is the perfect example. When you keep 90% of an outfit traditional, safe and classy- you can take risks with the rest and still end up looking like a star.

4) Know your shapes
A lot of Anna's outfits emphasise her legs. You should emphasize your best features too!

5) Contrast
Anna is fantastic in the contrast realm- actually that is what makes many of her outfits so amazing! I love that in this outfit she pairs a black leather jacket with something soft and feminine. You can do that too. Contrast can prevent your clothes from looking too "costume-y". A great reminder for people like me who tend to have many different extreme styles.

6) Variety
Anna does not just have one style- she experiments broadly and pulls from vintage. I dare say someone this adventurous would probably be a bit bored with one style. Perhaps it is time for you to branch out and try something new?

Stone Reviews Fitzgerald

"So I finished this book last night. Maybe not the greatest novel ever, but the right book at the right time. I have hated F. Scott Fitzgerald since 10th grade. At 15 I was not ready to read The Great Gatsby. I didn’t get it and I didn’t like it. I liked Star Wars. Lord of the Rings was as high brow as I got those days. I liked to read, but I liked light-sabers and long-swords, not moody billboards. A decade later I still like light-sabers and longwords, but I am able to appreciate literature a bit more, or at least one would hope given I just finished my masters in Lit at Oxford. I borrowed Tender is the Night from my girlfriend because it checked the major box signifying a good climbing trip read: it was long. Long books are essential to survive rain delays. Well I dove in, still loathing Fitzgerald, and emerged yesterday suitably shaken. I will not spoil the story, but decadent 20-something americans living beyond their means in Europe on the edge of a collapse hits pretty close to home when one is a 25 year old American living in Oxford. The beauty and curse of Oxford is that it allows you to fake being decadent. With innumerable black-tie dinners, balls, etc., not to mention my predilection for getting ‘research’ funding the visit medieval libraries in, say Italy, one begins to think one has money. Sipping a mid 80’s Bordeaux, or say, 1950’s Port- on the college of course- in a tuxedo while lounging in a medieval garden leads to delusions of grander. As a Sub-Dean, I have seen people ‘crack’ the way Fitzgerald describes, and his evocation of an American who has enough money to peak in the door but is always waiting to see when everyone’s glass is full to offer to buy a round is haunting. Basically, I had to grow into Fitzgerald. Hemmingway is an accessible ex-pat. His terse style and rollicking narratives play up (parody?) the adventure seeking American where as one can almost read Fitzgerald’s Hemmingway-esq Tommy Baraban as the ironically Gallic foil to his own American anxiety embodied in Dick Diver. In the end Fitzgerald’s restraint makes the book. What he does not say overwhelms what he does say. Just like most of the teeny boppers in Oxford, content to stick to their alcho-pops at lurid bops, would spit out an Americano as too bitter or harsh, the teenage reader of Fitzgerald is so unprepared for his balanced cocktail of money, booze, sunshine, and regret that he or she- or me in this case- doesn’t get it at all. Even if they do, they don’t ‘dig it,’ in 90’s parlance. On the other hand, a decade later, Tender is the Night goes down like a real Old Fashioned after a long, hard, days work."

What I Always Carry With Me

I think it is fascinating what people carry each day. Some people keep things really simple- wallet and cell phone. I do not. As a child I was told "always be prepared"... And not just told, mind you, I was trained to be prepared. Even today I find it impossible to leave the house without a bag. (currently loving the Burberry Prorsum above) And well, here are my essentials:

+ Altoids (my addiction. original or ginger)
+ Novel (for a spare hour. currently reading Hemingway)
+ Larousse (French/English dicionary. for spare moments)
+ Pen (specifically a: Pilot V7 precise fine. fave)
+ Planner (slim, leatherbound)
+ Notebook/sketchbook (moleskin)
+ Chapstick (organic peach from Ella's in Traverse City)
+ Ciggarette Case (that I use as a wallet)
+ Keys/Cell Phone (duh)
+ Toothbrush and Deoderant
(one never knows where the day/night will lead)
+ Snack (raw almonds, or an apple)

Everyone has a few peculiarities of their daily portage.

Zach Stone on Ownership

"When Grant asked me to do this, I was initially hesitant on several accounts. First, I am a proud man, and talking about stuff does not jive with my vision of my own masculinity.1 Secondly, blogging about stuff is, in my experience, the quickest way to be dissatisfied with what one does have. As I have ruminated over his request- a post about clothing and spirituality/morality/ethics- I recalled two poems about clothing by an old friend. In one he contemplates a series of possessions passed down among the men in his family: a watch, a hunting, coat, etc. In another he realizes he just purchased his final overcoat, i.e. the last one he will need before dying, and asks when he will be on to pencils and paper clips. In both cases 'stuff' served as an anchor for memory and meaning. To borrow an idea from an older friend and mentor, T.S. Eliot, stuff can function in our lives the way an 'objective correlative' operates in a poem.2 This is, of course, the basic premise of wedding/engagement rings. In short, emotion and memory are funny beasts. While inanimate objects do not have memories per se, the force of human memory invests them with significance derived from the experiences they facilitated.

And now I arrive at my boots. I've written about my Red Wings before. Since January 2010 they have seen 12 countries, sat at high tables, climbed mountains, stomped through snow, gone to weddings, served as a pillow, and generally done everything.3 I am not, though, here to celebrate their versatility in some paean or exhortation to purchase. Rather I wish to consider our relationship. I remember lacing them in the dark to slink out of bedrooms I didn't belong in. I see a scar on the right heel- filled in with polish- from a barbwire fence I jumped to tell a girl I loved her. I see the worn down heels from the cobbles and pavements of Oxford and Italy. I see the badly scuffed toes, wear still visible beneath the buffing, of the volcanic rock of Mt. Esja. When I lace them up I remember wearing them from London to Istanbul last winter. The little flecks of mud remind me of the happiest walks of my life in the hills between London and Oxford. Their burnished sheen reminds me of a mother who loves her son too much to let his boots go to ruin. Even their label recalls a city that just won't die even though the whole world is trying to kill it.4 My boots are nothing special themselves; rather they have walked with me through two of the most significant years of my life. Periodically I see other boots that I think look nice, but really, I wouldn't trust them. The last few years have been a season of risk taking and growth, if at times painful. I have bounced between countries, jobs, and houses. And yet each morning starts about the same: tea, tea, tea, lace up the boots and get to work. Contentment, I have found, comes not from having the right things but deciding to really own that which one does possess. Ownership is a daily choice to embrace that which is in front of you rather than seek escape in the desire for that which might be better. It may be silly to try and fasten such a 'big' idea to a pair of boots, but really, that's the whole point of ownership: 'to give to airy nothings local habitation and a name.'5"

Questions on Clothing and Spirituality

Throughout this month we will be discussing the spiritual significance of clothing. This discussion is, in reality, part of a much deeper discussion regarding the spiritual significance of all inanimate things- but I want to focus on clothing. Culture Keeper is not a blog about spirituality, nor is it an academic rant- but it is however dedicated to getting deep down at the roots of what we wear and why we wear it.

The Time for clothing yourself thoughtlessly is over. We are now in an age that demands of us all accountability for what we consume. This leads us into an even greater realm of discussion: the holistic idea that our spirituality is necessarily connected to the realms of social justice and the environment. Somehow what we put on each day is connected to the hands that made it and the mind that envisioned it, and the ground from which it grew.

Every day we select garments to put very close to our bodies- garments that we own for years. We wear clothing as a part of our existence, reflecting a bit of our inner world and belying our deepest beliefs.

In a few days Zach Stone will be writing about "Ownership and Memory". He shares great insight into the human experience and our spiritual connection to what we wear. Perhaps you have some insight too- some idea of how "what we wear" is connected to the deeper realm of "who we are". If so we would welcome any illumination.

People seem to abuse the word "dapper" quite a bit. I hear it applied nearly every day to things that are far from actually dapper. Here is some clarification. Dapper is a very specific thing. It means "Neat and trim" but also has the connotation of put-together, graceful and somewhat elegant. This word also bears a definition of "lively and brisk" which adds a bit of energy and eagerness.

To look dapper one must iron one's clothes, be well-groomed and sport elements of classic menswear. Ties, suits, suspenders, fedoras, etc.
Dapper today holds strongly to the classics.

To be dapper:
+ think "classic menswear"
+ put a spring in your step
+ listen to Fred Astaire
+ keep your look tidy and polished

Thrifting Confession: Karen Dickerson

"I simply love thrifting. The key to being a good thrifter is being able to see the potential of a garment. Do you know how to sew (or have a close friend who will do it for free)? You're well on your way to being a champion of consignment shopping. Of what I buy at a thrift store, probably 50% I wear as-is, and the other 50% I alter in some way. For the most part, I just look at the color, pattern, fabric type, and condition. Fit is usually secondary (although it is smart to try things on before you buy them). If something doesn't fit, I get out my sewing machine and make it fit! Something really important to look at is the fabric type. Keep in mind that synthetic fabrics hold in odors. Even though that beautiful jacket fits you perfectly and is in great condition, if it is polyester or acrylic and has a strong odor, it would probably be in your best interest to pass on that one.

I love the 50s silhouette, cinched waist and fuller skirt, so I buy a lot of vintage shirtwaist dresses at the thrift store. I can make them more modern several different ways: alter the sleeve length, change the buttons, alter the hem, pair with a cool belt. A few months ago, I was at Goodwill and I found an amazing mustard colored cotton blazer. I had to snatch it up immediately. It was a little plain-looking, so I took a bit of vintage lace my grandmother gave me and attached it to the pockets. It added the right bit of interest to keep it from looking boring. The blazer is actually my size, so I don't need to alter it in that way, but the shape is a little boxy, so I might put in some darts to add curve. Thrifting is definitely a great way to experiment with style. I recently found a pair of plum corduroy pants that were just my size. The fit was a bit old-fashioned (think baggy 90s mom jeans) so I altered them to a more modern style. I absolutely love them! I never thought I'd be one to wear plum pants, but I took a chance and was pleasantly surprised. They are cheerful and make me feel spunky when I wear them. :)

Don't restrict yourself to one section of the shop! Men might have a harder time with this, but if you're a woman, feel free to roam the whole store! Find your oversized cardigans, big button-down shirts, and boyfriend jeans in the men's section! If you have a small frame, you might have some success in the larger children's sizes. Also, sometimes people are sloppy shoppers and hang up their discarded items wherever they please, so something amazing may be tucked in between granny's teddy bear printed turtlenecks. Take your time. Enjoy the weird things you find, and keep your eyes peeled for a great new piece for your wardrobe.

My favorite thing about shopping second-hand is that I get to be creative and make up a style that is all my own without spending a ton of money! Have fun and don't take yourself or your style too seriously!"

My Style: Layers

I have a strong proclivity to over-layer. Or perhaps it is just the right amount of layering. Either way it appears a bit excessive. Therefore, as with most fashion topics I have made up a set of rules for myself .

Here are a few of my Layering Guidelines:

+Have an idea in mind
Pirates, Gandhi, Hippies, French Revolutionaries- they all layered. It is okay to have fun with your inspirations. I like to dress pretty extreme- and the people who inspire me are/were extreme too. I can wear an outfit inspired by T. E. Lawrence without actually dressing like him. That is were the creativity comes in.

+Think about your silhouette
You are not a Tele-tubby. please don't look like a rotund blob. If you are layering on top, try keeping it skinny on the bottom.

+ Control your colors
I like to keep my colors simple. I rarely wear fewer than three scarves at a time, and often more than one thin cardigan- so I try to keep things pretty muted and reserved in the color category. When you layer monochromatically you can wear whatever you want.

+Try not to look homeless
Even if you actually are, I would hope that you are clean and well-groomed. Getting crazy with layers leaves people with the idea that you perhaps cannot afford a jacket. Here is a good rule: if you are wearing more than one cardigan you should not wear fingerless gloves. Also- avoid standing near trash-can fires.

Thrifting Confession: Andrew Skipper

"As an antiques dealer, I frequent estate sales and flea markets. I don't ever go out looking for anything specific. If something catches my eye, I go for it. I have a great appreciation for things that are well made, and I've found that vintage pieces were made to last. When I find a piece, I think about the story behind it. Who wore this cardigan before me? What type of home did the owner of this bow tie live in? What dinner parties did this sport coat attend? For me, that's part of the fun of thrifting. I love to find things that speak to the past's sense of occasion such as bow ties, tie bars, fur, leather boots, and other unique accessories. They evoke a time when people dressed for dinner. In today's world, where we often see people wearing pajamas in public, I like to wear something that oozes luxury instead. Someone once told me to always keep your home a little bit neater than the homes of those you socialize with, your car a little bit cleaner than your friends', and dress a little bit better than the people you are with on a daily basis. By incorporating unique vintage pieces into your wardrobe, you'll definitely be setting yourself apart from the crowd."

You don't have to wear a suit again. Ever.
Seriously- it is completely possible to dress well without relying on the same uniform. Just use your classic suiting elements (trousers, jacket, vest) and mix them up. This image is a great example of how to dress up without actually wearing a suit:

To dress well without wearing a suit:
+ Simple color palette (gray, navy, and black are safe choices)
+ Bit of bright color (add ONE extra color)
+ Nicest shoes you own (they can dress-up the entire outfit)
+ Layers (vests, cardigans, etc.)
+ Suiting elements (blazer, trousers, pocket square)
+ Simple and clean (the slimmer the cut and crisper the lines- the better you will look)

"I have long been a thrifter. I am in many ways a cheap person, though stores heralding “mega% off sales” fail to attract my attention. I love the serendipity of a thrift store. Shopping among others castoffs is like retail roulette and I’ve been addicted all my life. It began with hand-me-downs from my cousins, and before long I was more excited to select free things from a black trash bag then get gift certificates to the mall. Now it’s a way of life for me.

When I’m bored or just have time to kill I’ll stop by a shop. I may have something in mind that I would like to eventually purchase and if I find something that meets my specifications, I’ll get it. Since I’m not in a hurry, I often look over the entire store and leave with nothing, but I have acquired many items of décor and clothing I’ll probably have forever. Most of my favorite things were not bought in a hurry. My wardrobe has been assembled with leisure, and since I have time to carefully select what I want (and again, I’m cheap) I rarely regret a purchase.

If I am in a hurry, I know exactly what I’m looking for and need it now. I get tunnel vision. I have in my mind the precise sort of fugly 1970’s home furnishing for a White Elephant party at work, and only the best will do. In such times I can be in and out in 10 minutes.

My convictions where thrifting is concerned are . . .well . . .I have very few. I honestly have no limits as to what I will buy, and use, and enjoy, second- hand. If I’d buy it new, I usually prefer to buy it used. There is one great exception however. I have a difficult time finding used jeans and trousers that fit and look the way I want them to. As a result, I tend to thrift from the waist up. Though I may not have any other thifting standards, I’m picky ‘bout my pants. You gotta’ draw the line somewhere. " - Tyler Grant

Perhaps those factors add to his growing success as "a person of note" in the greater Chicago area. Skipper has been decorating and re-designing the homes of wealthy socialites for several years now. He can commonly be found in his natural habitat- entertaining guests at someone else's poolside cocktail hour.

"Thrifting" might be a new term for some of you- esp. those who are not from the states. It does not exactly refer to "being thrifty" but rather to the practice of exploring charity, antique, and second-hand shoppes. Most people don't go thrifting- but for an increasing number of us in the states it has become the (ironically) chic thing to do. This spring Culture Keeper is discussing the world of thrifting...

"When I have money I go thrifting at least once a week. I'll spend an entire afternoon and hit four or five charity shoppes. I bring along a snack. I'm generally looking for a few specific things- but I always pick out good quality vintage along the way that I know I can re-sell. I like Thrift stores because I know I can experiment cheaply. There are styles I would never try, but because they are only going to cost a few dollars I will take the risk. Some days I don't actually purchase anything- but most days I will spend around fifty dollars. I end up making more than I spend. I buy a lot of old canvases to paint over. Clothes from thrift shoppes make up about fifty percent of my wardrobe. I have also been able to find a lot of really great art pieces- both sculpture and paintings- those are my favorite finds." - Jonathan Grant

The Soil and The Sun

There is something special about this band. The Soil And The Sun are the kind of band that gathers an entire community of positive energy. You can sense it at their shows. They have developed their own form of tribal-folk-rock, and work it with their mind-blowing live performances. I'm hooked. As the director of fashion house- Lanvin- it would be easy for him to feature celebrities- but this book is more about collaboration and the people who actually make the clothes he designs. My first exposure to Matisse was in 2006 at the Musee d'Art Moderne De La Ville De Paris. His work did not make that much of an impact on me then. But this autumn I stumbled across a book of his paper cuttings at an antique store in Missouri. Perhaps the timing has to be right to be impacted by art. I am kind of obsessed with his work right now. Great use of color and pattern and shape. Not hampered by ultra-realism. Expressive. Give Matisse a chance.

The Thing About Shorts

Everyone can wear shorts. You may perhaps be thinking that you are too short or too tall or too rotund. Not so. The keys to remember here are fit and proportion. For best results "think tailored". If your shorts are too baggy or too long- you are going to look ridiculous.

Shorts should hit above the knee- one to eight inches. One inch if you are extremely modest and eight if you are extremely brave. If they fall below the knee you are going to look shorter than you actually are.

When shorts are too wide on the leg they create a swinging, bell-like effect. So make sure that they follow the width of your thigh- with a leg opening just wide enough to be comfortable. I would also posit that cargo pockets are not the most flattering style in the world- so use sparingly. Perhaps one or two pockets are okay- but let's not get crazy.

Obviously styles come and go. I can recall a pair of cargo shorts I once wore constantly. They were huge, extremely khaki, and possessed an unspeakable number of pockets. Of course that was 1998 and I had to have something to go with my Airwalks.

Truth is those shorts were fun. I don't really regret wearing them as a child. But now that I am an adult I realize that there is something connecting the way we dress and the way we feel and our ideas about ourselves. You see, people spend more time trying to cover up the way they feel about their own body than they actually do dressing it. Even children will dress in frumpy, baggy, layers thinking that will hide their insecurities. Foolishness. Let's all grow up a bit and take responsibility for the way we look and the way we dress. This is the perfect time to be honest with yourself.

Chances are you have a pair of shorts in your wardrobe that do not flatter you. This might be a good time to take them out, say your good-byes and donate them. Don't keep clothing that makes you look ridiculous- that just makes my job all the more difficult.

The Style of Megan Gilger

To say that Megan Gilger knows her own style would be a huge understatement. In fact, Megan curates her personal style with strategic enthusiasm. She has this semi-preppy, clean aesthetic that channels the best of JCrew, Kate Spade, and classic americana. Megan is also brave enough to try new styles, colors, and shapes. She somehow manages to push her own boundaries while maintaining a recognizable style. I am constantly seeing magazine spreads or lookbooks to new collections and thinking- "that is so Megan Gilger". And its a great thing that she knows what she likes. As both the brains and brawn behind Hitch Design Studio and The Fresh Exchange blog Megan daily transfers her tastes into solid advice and beautiful designs. Her husband Mike also has fantastic style. His beardly, lumberjack-meets-Soho-designer, style is always spot-on. Their design creations are fantastic- but so are their outfits. Always perfectly put together. Always curated and understated. Always classic.

All of the recent adventures at The Hytte have reminded me how much I want a little place in a forest somewhere. Now and then I get the urge to wander through the forest. to plant a little garden and get really dirty. I am a city boy- but give me a week of climbing trees, swimming in ponds and running full-tilt down meadows trails- and you will have me seriously doubting that cities even exist. Since I've been dreaming I decided to put together an inspiration board with Pinterest pics. There is something cathartic about expressing dreams. Now I can go back to the city in peace.

Don't be Dull

Here are a few ideas on how to dress a little more interesting...
Most of this will seem like common sense, but I am amazed at how many times I find myself repeating these tips to clients. So here they are in a handy guide.

Accessorize
The smallest touches can make a huge impact. Think about details. Cuff links, pocket squares, sunglasses, bags and backpacks, bracelets, watches, belts, etc. Accessories are a great place to experiment without much risk. Invest in a few Adventurous pieces
Don't spend a lot of money on them- but don't buy cheap either. When I aquire a new, dangerous piece I force myself to wear it in 5 different outfits within 7 days. that is my rule. if I cannot do it, or grow tired of it- I get rid of it. Chances are the piece will stick. I bought a metallic gold leather belt last year. I liked it, it was good quality, and it was on sale for an insanely low price. That belt has become one of my wardrobe staples. I wear it several times a week. This makes me A) glad that it is good quality and will be in my closet for a long time to come, and B) glad that I took a risk and stepped outside of my normal comfort zone. I am constantly making up rules about these sorts of situations, so here is my next rule: if you are scared about dressing dangerously- try it with just one piece. If you dress in a manner that is completely put-together/normal/tailored and add just one thing that is brave and really pops- you will transform the entire outfit and few will question it. This works especially well with a suit. Be brave. Try something new.

Trousers that are not Jeans
Now and then you should wear something on your bottom half that is not denim. Try it. Everyone will think you are dressing up. Perhaps you should step outside your comfort zone a little bit. I like to think in extreme sillouettes. to acheive this I either wear skinny jeans or sailor pants. Sailor pants are very comfortable and fun to wear. I have a black pair in cotton and an olive green pair in wool. I wear them both year round and I love them. But you don't have to go extreme to achieve something unique. I love the pants above by Zara and Balmain respecively. they achieve a unique style and still seem comfortable. Sure they look a bit like sweat pants- but look how they are dressed up with a blazer! voila! Plus they fit well, and fit is the key. Trying something new and adventurous does not mean trapsying about in public in your yoga pants. Rather, it means stepping outside your normal dressing routine.

Be Bold
Add some color. Get noticed in a good way. It's really that easy. If you keep everything else pretty staid, a single color will really add interest.

Add a Pattern
That seems simple enough, right? Find a pattern you like. If you are too scared try plaid. Patterns can be fun and gender-neutral, an easy way to spice up your wardrobe. Don't go overboard in purchasing patterns, however, they can look dated and can actually inhibit your personal style. I have had a few clients who buy too heavily in patterns- making their clothing less versitile. These folks end up spending more money on clothes they can wear less-frequently. But you won't have that problem. Go for a pattern in a sweater or tie or scarf. Those are safe places to start.

Add a Hat
Could it really be that easy? Yes, It is. even if you don't think you can successfully wear a hat- you can. it is just a matter of finding the right fit, and the right hat. Find one that will make a statement and wear it regularly. Hats make excellent statements. Chances are good that if you wear a particular hat (such as a fedora) three or four times- your friends will start to accociate you with good style. They will think of you every time they see a similar hat.

Cat Stevens

As a child I never noticed Cat Stevens. His voice was lost among the others of his era that filtered through the radio. It was not until I was living in Paris a few years ago that I was confronted by him. I was staying Easter weekend at my girlfriend's apartment. One Drizzly afternoon her mother Ann-Marie made a pot of mint tea and said "sit down. You have got to listen to this." As she played the entire "Tea For Tillerman" album she told stories about each song and especially emphasised the lyrics of "Father and Son". Since then I have become kind of obsessed. Cat Stevens' voice is unique and his lyrics are haunting and humanizing.

I don't remember how I first met Katie Coogan. it was in Kentucky, that is for sure. But life has been magical ever since.

Katie Coogan is a mixture of so many things. She is old-timey banjo music and Georgia summertime. She is modern girl-about-town. She is sweet tea and gold buttons and moonshine and indie rock. She knows just about everyone. Katie Coogan is one of those rare people who understands poetry deeply. She is always connecting people with good poetry and music- which to her are the same things.

Culture Keeper is excited to feature her work in the upcoming weeks. We will be posting her collages of collected poems and quotes as well as her own poetry. She has this brilliant way of making poetry super accessible- putting Patti Smith's lyrics next to a few lines from Edna St. Vincent Millay. One reads her collages and suddenly sees the written word in a new way. Her own poetry is equally illuminating.

I am inspired by the 60's: cat eyes, big hair up-do's, pencil skirts and chandelier earings. Very few people have genuine, definable style. My friend Caitlin has just that. She has honed her appearance to a very comfortable chic boho. She always looks amazing. Her hair is often a hippie-mess with a side braid. She wears great layers of fabric that make her look extremely artistic. Cowboy boots, heels, sequins- she can rock anything. Keep and eye out in the next few weeks- Caitlin will be guest blogging some of her personal style inspirations. I can't wait!

I love this poster. Great color use. Great composition. The film was okay- well filmed- great style- but a plot that was winding and failed to capture my imagination. Jean-luc Goddard's films are always interesting and stylish- but this one failed to stand out- even as I am describing it I am trying to figure out which scenes where from this film and which were from Mississippi Mermaid. I recommend it- if only for the experience. But I recommend the poster even more.

More of My Personal Style

My Wardrobe is built around pieces that get a lot of use. I have way too many clothes- but I only have a select collection that I completely adore and hope to keep forever. here is a quick guide to the pieces I cannot live without:

Stripes, pegged jeans, Navy Boat shoes. My summer staples. These take up about half of my wardrobe. Classic, easy, fun. I bought my first long-sleeved nautical stripe in 2006 at a the Gap store near St. Sulpice in Paris. If I had ten of them I would wear that shirt every single day. no joke. I love it.

My parents always said to be prepared for anything. I always carry a huge bag. you never know when you will have a few extra minutes to sketch or read another chapter of that novel, or need to add or remove a cardigan. the huge bag solves that. I love this bag from Heritage Leather Goods. (I hope I get this for christmas) Normally I find vintage bags in antique stores. This may make me look like a Granny about to board a train- but whatever. That's just part of my style.

Scarves. I have worn them for years. sometimes I wear up to six at a time. sometimes I wear a bedsheet as a scarf. Sometimes I wear a long scrap of black fabric left over from when my little brother recovered an ottoman. I currently adore this really soft orange/red scarf that my brother bought me at H+M. It works great for every season- and because I am always wearing black or Navy- it matches every outfit i put together.

Bracelets. I go in phases of wearing bracelets and hating bracelets. I currently wear five. each of them given to me by a dear friend or found in a thrift store. They make me feel like a gypsy, or a bedouin. I like the sound they make when the metal ones clink together. They remind me that style is relative to time and place.

Trench! I adore trench coats. I have a trench coat that was my dad's in the early 1980's. He gave it to me just before I moved to Paris. It does not quite fit right- but it keeps me warm. When I was in Vegas last winter I bought a lighter weight/ slimmer cut trench at a thrift store. I adore that Trench too. I wear it whenever possible.

I would not normally be the ideal canidate for a motorcycle jacket- but a few years ago I came across one at a Salvation Army shop. It was great, the weather was cold, and I had a few extra bucks- so I bought it. Now it is one of my favorite pieces. I wear it whenever I want to feel like a badass. seriously. I love mixing things up by adding a bow-tie or penny loafers. My friend Kirstin said my jacket looks like it has been run over a few times. I like to think that it was once worn by one of The Sex Pisols. Either way- this jacket rocks- and now is a staple in my wardrobe.

I own twelve winter coats. I find vintage ones mostly. Duffel coats, military coats, pea coats... I have a slight obsession. One of my favorites is a grey wool trench. Sometimes I add a fur collar. I want to change the buttons out and switch them to gold buttons.

This is my basic look- necklace, v-neck, skinny pants, jacket or cardigan. I guess that is pretty standard nowadays. I have a pair of skinny orange pants. I have hilarious stories about those pants. Perhaps they need their own article.... so more on that soon.

Shoes. Wing-tips are my standard. Frye boots are my winter standard- the harness kind, in black. whenever possible I wear moccasins. Going barefoot is the greatest luxury ever.

How I decorate

I am constantly thrifting. I am constantly searching antique stores. I am endlessly re-arranging. I only buy things I adore. I never pay very much for them. I only purchase used. I have collected silver bowls of a particular shape- mostly because I was given one- but also I loved the shape- and I am obsessed with bowls. Bowls are practical and beautiful. I also have a great collection of old books, paintings and chairs. I don't actually sit in chairs- I prefer the floor- but I adore the shape and construction of chairs. I am constantly re-working my walls- because I aquire new pieces and wish to feature them. my walls are always cluttered with paintings, photographs, and artifacts. I love rugs. I love cluttered. I love fabric. I cover my beds with layers and patterns and pillows. I do this to windows too- layers of fabric. I want always to feel like I am in a bedouin tent... or an archaeologist's apartment in Bloomsbury. The only technology visible- an old record player. Sometimes I will use a black rotary phone- but that depends on my apartment at the time. Maps. Every blank space on a table or wall has a map. my favorite is this huge wall map of South America. I could look at it for hours. I found it in a pile of maps my college was throwing away. the colors are bright and vibrant. That is how I decorate- like an archaeologist turned museum curator turned native. Bam.

Ryan Mcginley's work is lighthearted and care-free. He works almost exclusively with nudes- lending his photographs a timeless quality (although the coloration speaks strongly of the early 70's). Somehow he manages to capture a beauty and innocence that is at once nostalgic and sweet.

I love his work- the colors the tone, the portraits, the way he captures the interior world of a person. Magical.

Perhaps he is some kind of Robert Mapplethorpe/ Andrew Wyeth/ Maxfield Parrish combo?
